What Is Freezpen?
Freezpen is a fast, non-invasive cryotherapy treatment used to remove benign skin lesions. A precise handheld device delivers a controlled freezing agent directly to the lesion, targeting the tissue while minimizing effects on the surrounding skin. Freezpen is designed for comfort and speed. Most lesions can be treated in seconds, making it a convenient option for common, non-cancerous skin concerns. Freezpen is only appropriate for benign lesions. Our nurse practitioner assesses your skin lesions using a dermatoscope. If a lesion looks suspicious, we take a different course of action, such as a biopsy, a referral to a dermatologist, or reassessment in a few weeks.
What Can Freezpen Treat?
Freezpen may be used to treat a range of common benign skin lesions, including:
- Skin tags.
- Warts.
- Actinic keratosis.
- Age spots and sun spots.
- Moles (when clinically appropriate).
- Milia.
- Cherry angiomas.
- Fibromas.
- Sebaceous hyperplasia.
Not every lesion is suitable for Freezpen. Your provider will examine each lesion and confirm that it is benign and appropriate for cryotherapy before treatment.
Skin Tag Removal with Freezpen
Skin tags are small, soft growths that commonly appear on the neck, underarms, eyelids, and other areas of friction. Freezpen can target skin tags directly, often clearing them in one session for smaller lesions. Larger or more established skin tags may need a follow-up treatment. Your provider will explain what to expect for your specific lesion.
Wart Removal with Freezpen
Warts are caused by a viral skin infection and can appear on the hands, feet, and other areas. Freezpen cryotherapy targets the wart tissue directly, which may help reduce its size or clear it over one or more sessions. Some warts, particularly plantar warts or long-standing warts, may require multiple treatments. Your provider will discuss a realistic treatment plan based on the wart’s size, location, and history.
Age Spots, Sun Spots and Pigmented Lesions
Age spots, sun spots, and liver spots are flat pigmented areas that often develop from years of sun exposure. Freezpen may help lighten or reduce the appearance of these benign pigmented lesions.
Not all pigmentation responds the same way to cryotherapy. Deeper or widespread pigmentation may be better suited to a different treatment, such as IPL or a chemical peel. Your provider can help you choose the most appropriate option.
Actinic Keratosis, Milia and Other Common Lesions
Lesions
Actinic keratosis Actinic keratosis are rough, scaly patches caused by sun damage. Because these lesions can occasionally be a precursor to skin cancer, a clinical assessment is required before any cosmetic treatment is considered.
Milia
Milia are small, firm white bumps that commonly appear around the eyes and face. Freezpen may help target milia that are confirmed to be suitable for cryotherapy.
Cherry angiomas, fibromas and sebaceous hyperplasia These common benign growths can also be treated with Freezpen in many cases. Your provider will confirm the diagnosis and suitability for treatment during your consultation.
How Does Freezpen Work?
During treatment, your provider holds the Freezpen against the lesion. It releases high-pressure nitrogen gas at -89 °C, which rapidly and precisely freezes the affected area without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue. Most lesions are treated in seconds, and a single appointment may address several lesions in one visit. No anesthesia is typically required for most lesions. After treatment, the frozen lesion may form a scab or blister before naturally shedding over the following one to a few weeks.
Freezpen Results and Sessions Needed
Many smaller lesions clear after a single Freezpen treatment. Larger, thicker, or more established lesions, such as certain warts or skin tags, may require a second or third session spaced a few weeks apart. Results vary depending on the lesion type, size, and how your skin responds to treatment. Your provider will explain what is realistic for your specific lesion during your consultation.
Freezpen Downtime and Aftercare
Freezpen is known for minimal downtime. You may notice temporary redness, swelling, or a small blister at the treatment site, which typically resolves within one to two weeks as the area heals. Aftercare may include:
- Keeping the area clean and dry.
- Avoiding picking at any scab or blister.
- Protecting the area from direct sun exposure while it heals.
- Applying any recommended ointment or dressing.
- Contacting the clinic if you notice signs of infection or unusual healing.
Your provider will give you specific aftercare instructions based on the lesion treated.
Is Freezpen Safe?
Freezpen is generally well tolerated, but it is not suitable for every lesion or every person. A clinical assessment is required to confirm that a lesion is benign before any cryotherapy treatment. Tell your provider about your medical history, any skin conditions, and any lesions that have changed recently. Our nurse practitioner assesses your skin lesions using a dermatoscope.
If a lesion looks suspicious, we take a different course of action, such as a biopsy, a referral to a dermatologist, or reassessment in a few weeks.
